The idea of the “Greek Museum of Adelaide”

The Greek Museum of Adelaide began as an idea conceived by Chrysoula Melissinaki in 2012, the year she moved from Greece to Australia with her family. The absence of a Greek museum in South Australia — a state where at least 30,000 people of Greek heritage reside — was a significant cultural gap in the vibrant city of Adelaide.

Chrysoula Melissinaki, together with her husband, Panagiotis Mavraidis, decided to turn this idea into reality. They formed a team of people who shared the same vision, and on 9 May 2019 they established the “Greek Museum of Adelaide Incorporated”, a not‑for‑profit Incorporated Association (Registration No. A43958) in South Australia.

The founding members of the Museum are first‑ and second‑generation Greek immigrants who arrived in Australia between 1950 and 2012. The Museum welcomes everyone to become a member or volunteer, regardless of colour, race, or religion.
